OpenAI boss and tech billionaire Sam Altman has recently said that people politely saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT is costing tens of millions of dollars. Please” and “Thank you” are contributing to extra energy expenses for the company. He wondered about the cost of electricity by polite language in interactions with ChatGPT.

Altman claims that OpenAI has lost of “tens of millions of dollars” in electricity from people saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’ to their models is.

“You never know,” he added. “It may seem pointless to treat an AI with respect, some AI engineers say it’s an important move” Microsoft’s design manager Kurtis Beavers, says this type of proper a code of conduct reflecting social norms and expectations about how to behave in social situations “helps generate respectful, collaborative outputs.”

Beavers notes, “The argument can certainly be made; what we consider “Artificial Intelligence AI” might more accurately be described as “prediction machines,” like our phone’s predictive text.

All AI models depends heavily on energy stored in global data centers. Which already accounts for almost 2% of the global electricity consumption. According to Goldman Sachs, each ChatGPT-4 query uses about 10 times more electricity than a standard Google (GOOGL) search, which is massive.

According to Washington Post if one out of every 10 working Americans uses GPT-4 once a week for a year (meaning 52 queries by 17 million people) the power needed would be comparable to the electricity consumed by every household in Washington, D.C. almost for 20 days.

Response politely to AI also add to OpenAI’s increase of water bill. AI uses water to cool down the servers that generates data. According to the University of California, using GPT-4 to generate 100 words consumes up to three bottles of water and even a three-word response such as “You are welcome” uses about 1.5 ounces of water.

So please lets use the words what ever we need to AI. Stop saying unnecessary words and commands to save the energy and water bill.

Let’s use AI only when it is necessary. Please save energy and water bill in the data center as Altman claims
