According to DOGE, the initiative has already saved Americans $130 billion.

Elon Musk has announced his intention to step down from his position leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by the end of May. He stated that he believes he can achieve his goal of cutting federal spending within that time.

Currently serving as an adviser and “special government employee” in the Trump administration, Musk shared during a Fox News interview with Bret Baier that he is confident DOGE can meet its mission of reducing the federal deficit by $1 trillion within the legally allotted 130-day period.

“I believe we will have completed the majority of the work needed to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars within that time frame,” Musk said in the interview with Baier.

What Is DOGE?

On his first day back in the White House, Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency through an executive order. The department’s goal: reduce federal spending by $1 trillion within 18 months. Musk heads the team responsible for conducting cost audits, streamlining agencies, and driving digital transformations across federal departments.

With Musk at the helm, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) introduced trackers to monitor federal spending and initiated budget cuts at various agencies, including the Social Security Administration.

When asked if he would extend his 130-day term, Musk stated that he believes most of the work will be finished by then. He said, ‘I think we will have accomplished most of the tasks needed to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion within that time frame. ‘

According to DOGE’s website, as of March 27, the department has saved Americans $130 billion, or about $807 per taxpayer.
