US President Donald Trump has admitted he would consider deporting SpaceX and Tesla boss Elon Musk from the country. This follows the South African-born billionaire’s continued criticism of Trump’s flagship spending bill.

Trump had appointed Musk to head the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE. But he decided to step down from the role in May 2025.

President Trump said he would “Take a Look” into deporting Elon Musk from the US to South Africa, after Musk renewed criticism of Trump’s “Big Beautiful” domestic policy bill.

A reporter asked if he would deport Musk, a naturalised US citizen. Before he departed to visit a new immigration detention facility in the Florida Everglades, which is called “Alligator Alcatraz,” Trump replied, “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look”

Trump added, “We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”

President Trump said that Elon Musk would probably have to close his shops and head back home to South Africa.

Reacting to Elon Musk’s attack on his spending bill, Trump launched a late-night rant against Musk. “Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one.

Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Elon may get more subsidies than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED”
